It's not as easy as it looks. The female body sees the sperm cells as foreign entity (which they are) and their presence elicit Immunological response. They're not only struggling to fertilize the eggs, but also to evade immune response, hence the term "survival of the fittest
Note that this affects weak sperm cells the most as healthy cells move at such great speed, & it takes a little while for the vaginal vault to recognize foreign proteins present in the seminal fluid which harbours the sperm cells.
