When Muslims return to their creator we do our best to bury them with dignity and humanely, while protecting the environment.
That's why the Abuja Gudu Muslim Cemetery which has both a Abuja environmental protection board (AEPB )government managed Muslim burial ground and Christian burial ground.
Visitors are required to park outside except the vehicle transporting the deceased. Masks are required on the premises and a form is usually filled by the next of kin with the information of the deceased and the contact or next of kin.
Also a death certificate is usually enquired about where available and the legitimate cause of death.
No laying if blocks is allowed.
Funeral rights such as bathing the deceased and shrouding them in a white cloth ( likkaffani in Hausa ) after which people gather and pray for them a special prayer called Salat all janaiza, usually arranged in the nearest Friday mosque with the imam or local leaders who also investigate and ask questions about the cause of death.
Homicide and suicide is ruled out or any other criminal intent is ruled out. Otherwise the police is notified if something is fishy.
Infront of Gudu cemetery is a sign board with the contact information of grave diggers who are notified before arrival so they can start digging the grave. Please don't spam.
They are usually noticeable among the crowd if mourners in their green uniform.
There is a Duaa which is good to be recited in entering the cemetery
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمُ يَا أَهْلَ الْقُبُورِ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ أَنْتُمُ سَلَفُنَا وَنَحْنُ بِالْأَثَرِ
"Oh inmates of the graves, salaam on you. Allah forgive us and you all. You left first and we will be coming later".
*Or*
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمُ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُونَ نَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ
"Oh Muslims residing here, salaams on you, by the will of Allah we will also be coming to you. We seek safety for us and you".
